About
Since our founding in 1989, Burling Bank has been guided by the same principles that define our independent community bank: trust, collaboration, and innovation. With a focus on individuals and business entities within the Chicagoland area, we know the importance of a community-centric approach. It is this approach that allows us to provide what most banks cannot: a rare combination of personal connection, transparency, and innovation.
Burling Bank takes its name from a Chicago leader who embodied our defining principles – one of our city’s first architects, Edward J. Burling. Mr. Burling was gifted with a clear vision of the world-class city that would emerge from the flourishing trade hub that existed at the time of his arrival in 1843.
After decades of significant architectural contributions, Edward Burling lost a lifetime of work in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Undeterred, Burling devoted himself to the rebuilding of what ultimately became our great city today.
The path forged by Edward Burling still drives the spirit of Burling Bank, compelling us to work relentlessly towards our vision of Chicago’s future. Please join us as we continue to partner with those moving Chicago forward: from local community entrepreneurs, to publicly traded corporations, and all those in between.
In the words of our founder:
“It seems appropriate to me today to recognize the foresight, creativity, and tenacity of Edward Burling and the pioneer spirit of the people who have built Chicago.”

Inspired By A Visionary
When naming Burling Bank in 1989, founder David Goldberg drew inspiration from Edward J. Burling, the visionary architect behind our home, the iconic Chicago Board of Trade Building. Burling’s creativity, foresight, and tenacity embodied the pioneering spirit of Chicago’s builders and aligned perfectly with the bank’s own aspirations. Honoring Burling’s legacy, the bank proudly carries his name as a tribute to the ongoing innovation, resilience, and growth of Chicago.
